Destination days

According to a report published in 2013 by LV= travel insurance, one in six married British couples tied the knot abroad in the past five years, which is an increase of almost 20% compared to a decade ago. That’s a whole lot of wanderlust weddings!

Many couples are seeking guaranteed sunshine (or snow), or a more unique wedding experience, others are lured by the temptation of a more cost effective big day, or the appeal of a less complicated and scaled down wedding.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for getting married abroad, take a look at these Destination Guides for the who, what, when, where and how to getting married in locations such as the island of Ibiza, New York City, Morocco or beautiful Bali!

Go social

Social media continues to play a key role in weddings. From planning and inspiration via the plentiful supply of pretty pictures on Pinterest, to creating personalised hashtags for guests to tag their Instagram and Twitter posts, social is here to stay for your big day.

Let guests who can’t make it to your nuptials aware of your wedding hashtag, they can then follow updates and share in the joy of the day as it happens.

Less is more

There is a growing trend for smaller, more intimate weddings, with a focus on being understated and chic.

Brides and grooms are choosing to say ‘I Do’ with only their nearest and dearest present, with family style dining becoming increasingly popular over traditional extravagant wedding parties.

Food revolution

We are all becoming food connoisseur’s in our own right these days and as the popularity of fine wine continues to grow, so does the role of the wedding breakfast and tipple of choice.

Gone are the days of the average wedding breakfast reminiscent of school dinners; couples who love their grub are looking for venues who can serve up something scrumptious ensuring that the wedding breakfast is as memorable as the rest of the day – in a good way! Only fabulous food and wonderful worldwide wines will do.

Go local

Whether nuptials take place at home or further away, there’s a lean towards incorporating local traditions and flavours into wedding events.

Book traditional musicians and serve up delicious locally inspired dishes to add some further traditional character or add a little local flavour to your wedding favours by sourcing gifts at your wedding destination. Spanish sangria in glass bottles shaped like bulls (seen below), Italian bottles of herb infused olive oil, ceramic pots of regional rock salt, dainty bags bursting with locally sourced fruits, sweet treats and cakes or chunky jars filled to the brim with local honey, marmalade or jam all make thoughtful (and delicious!) favours.

Pretty maids all in a row

There’s nothing wrong with being pale and interesting – nude hues are still on trend and look fantastic for bridesmaid dresses – however bold floral prints are being seen on bridesmaids the world over.

Go for vintage-inspired tea dresses, mismatch flower prints with complimentary hues or add subtle ditsy flower prints. Mismatched bridesmaid dresses are also rising up the style charts, giving each maid a more individual look. If you love the idea of your maids making a statement in flower prints, take a browse through this inspiration page.

Flower power

Flower crowns – they create a really romantic feel, look incredible and will continue to storm the wedding world as a key trend this year. If you love flower crowns, take a browse through more floral fancies for inspiration and ideas.

At one with nature

Think romantic rustic themes, whimsical woodland weddings, flower crowns and au naturel styling. Take a look at more whimsical woodland ideas – perfect for a warm weather outdoor soiree or for bringing a little of the wilderness inside, if you’ll be keeping toasty indoors for a winter wedding.

More than words

Guys – the pressure is on! There are some beyond-brilliant proposals (this groom-to-be asked his lady to marry him on stage at a Justin Timberlake concert – that’s some good pre-planning right there!) and some simply amazing groom speeches (think of that song-slash-speech given by Tom from McFly on his wedding day) being shared on the Internet at the moment.

This is just the beginning, with grooms-to-be upping the anti with their proposal ideas and pulling out all the stops on their big day to do something special and unique.
