Helen & Dan   ♥   Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The first part of today’s adorable engagement story was on the blog this morning, be sure to check it out if you missed it. Helen and Dan are both from the UK but they live in tropical Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (lucky pair!). They really wanted their engagement shoot to showcase the heart of the city that they call home, so they headed to China Town to have a bold and busy backdrop to their photographs.

Whilst on their engagement shoot they stepped into the oasis of a ring shop. Feeling cool, calm and a million miles away from the sunshiny streets outside, they chose their wedding rings – what a special moment in time to have caught of camera!

Caroline, BlueCicada Photography:

“The second part of Helen and Dan’s engagement shoot was to go to where Dan found THE ring to propose to Helen (he had it designed and everything) and spend some time with them whilst they would start to look at the wedding bands. Enjoy the colourful city of KL and the fun moments with this lovely pair!”

Ask The Experts – Bespoke Engagement And Wedding Rings

14/04/2014 |

Getting Married Abroad Blog

It has become really important to many soon-to-be married couples to add unique elements to their wedding day in order to truly let their personality shine through at their special event.

Creating bespoke engagement and wedding rings is one way to give you a one of a kind design that is distinctive and personal to you as a couple and something you of course will treasure forever after the big day.

The engagement and wedding ring experts from Wedding Rings Direct are on hand to give you some advice on creating bespoke rings and to share some exciting examples of designs that brides and grooms-to-be have conjured up themselves….

Wedding Rings Direct:

Adopting an individual style to your wedding day has become extremely popular over the last couple of years, which has come hand in hand with a trend towards bespoke engagement and wedding rings. Bespoke rings are a brilliant way of setting your wedding apart from any other one that has taken place. You might have a similar dress, venue and car to someone else, but nobody will ever have the same wedding ring as you if you opt for bespoke wedding rings. This is why so many couples are choosing unique rings, instead of opting for traditional rings.

You would probably expect to pay celebrity wedding prices for such creative, modern and individual pieces of jewellery, but a lot of jewellers offer a free design; using your ideas to create something especially for you.

Bespoke rings can start from a sketch, picture or just an idea in your head which can then lead onto a design and the rings being handcrafted in the jeweller’s workshop. Bespoke can also be modifications on existing designs or amalgamating parts of different ring designs*. Some brides also require a shaped wedding ring to fit around their engagement ring for them both to sit perfectly next to each other; depending on the shape this can also be treated as a bespoke design.

You need to bear in mind that creating a bespoke design from start to finish may take a little longer than the non-bespoke route and you should always get a quote from the jeweller prior to them starting work on making the rings.

Below are some examples of bespoke rings:

  • This lovely customer wanted to frame their pretty vintage style engagement ring. As the cluster setting was quite large we needed to take some of the material away from the edge of the wedding band to make for a snug fit. The customer was keen to keep the vintage feel going so small diamonds were grain set along the edge to echo those along the engagement ring. This gave a really nice contrast and framed the ring perfectly.

20/02/2014 |

The experts at Wedding Rings Direct have been on hand over the last few months with helpful hints and tips with regard to choosing the perfect engagement and wedding rings.

This month, the topic up for discussion is what’s got the wow-factor in the wonderful world of engagement and wedding rings this year…

Wedding Rings Direct:

So 2014 has begun and with it comes some lovely trends in engagement and wedding rings. So we are here to talk you through what’s hot for brides and grooms in 2014!

Rose gold – here to stay!

A key trend for 2013 was rose gold for plain wedding rings and also to create contrast in mixed metal rings. Its stunning pink colour creates a warm tone which also looks beautiful surrounded by diamonds.

Yellow gold is back!

White gold has been the popular choice for jewellery since the late nineties, but now yellow gold is making a comeback! The more traditional choice, yellow gold’s comeback has been championed by the Duchess of Cambridge who wears a plain yellow gold wedding ring next to her huge sapphire engagement ring. Whether going for something classic and simple like a gold band or adding diamonds, yellow gold is timeless and back in fashion!

Another trend that is here to stay is vintage! Alongside the desire for brides and grooms to put a vintage twist on their wedding reception, they are extending that look and feel to their engagement and wedding rings. Choosing a vintage style ring that isn’t an antique allows you more choice in style, size and diamonds; getting exactly what you want within your budget.

Ask The Experts – Vintage Styled Engagement And Wedding Rings

16/01/2014 |

There are some things in the world of weddings that you just can’t beat getting expert advice on and so the experts at Wedding Rings Direct have been on hand over the last few months with helpful hints and tips with regard to choosing the perfect engagement and wedding rings.

This month they discuss a popular choice of engagement and wedding rings – vintage!

Wedding Rings Direct:

For this months blog post, we’ll be looking at vintage styled engagement and wedding rings.

Vintage themed weddings have been extremely popular over the last couple of years, which has come hand in hand with a trend towards vintage styled engagement and wedding rings. Brides and grooms are either choosing a new ring that has a vintage style, going for a truly vintage ring by scouring antique shops or being given family heirlooms.

During the reign of Queen Victoria, the British Empire had access to the diamond mines of the day, including mines in India and South Africa; during this era there was an increase in the amount of diamond set rings and towards maximising sparkle! This style was emphasised further by a mill-grain setting (shown above and below), filling the band to maximise the diamond and making it appear larger.

Modern rings which have been crafted with a vintage style are inspired by the Victorian and Edwardian era of ‘romance’ and sparkle. Brides and grooms can find the vintage style of ring(s) they love and then select their choice of metal, such as platinum, white gold, palladium, yellow gold etc. Selecting a new ring with a vintage twist also allows you to choose the cut and quality of the diamonds in the ring as well as finding a ring which also compliments your wedding or engagement ring.

You Mean The World To Me

There are some things in the world of weddings that you just can’t beat getting expert advice on.

So we thought, what better than for us to bring the top wedding specialists to you? We’ll be asking the professionals for insider knowledge and to share their pearls of wisdom in all the need-to-know areas, to help you along your wedding planning journey.

Over the coming months, the experts at Wedding Rings Direct will be letting us in on their wonderful world of engagement and wedding rings.

We’ll hand you over…

Wedding Rings Direct:

In last month’s article we discussed the different metal options for your wedding rings and gave you the advantages and some of the drawbacks for each metal. This month we are looking at the different wedding ring styles, from a classic plain wedding ring to something a little bit different.

Plain wedding rings

This style of wedding ring is the most popular and traditional choice. The main decision to make here is the type of metal you would like to choose, so last month’s blog post will really be able to help you! You will also have to make decisions on your profile, which is the style of ring when viewed as a cross-section, a court profile is the most traditional which is curved on the outside and inside for a comfortable fit. Other profiles include Double Comfort, Flat Court, Flat-Sided Court, D-Shape and Flat wedding rings.

With a plain wedding ring you will also be able to select the width and depth of the ring; the majority of rings are between 2mm and 10mm. The width can affect the comfort of the ring, and even the size needed. Depths are often referred to as light (1.3mm), medium (1.7mm), heavy (2.1mm), it is important to remember that these depths may vary from retailer to retailer.

Shaped wedding rings

Many engagement rings will have a slightly raised stone(s) for a ring to fit next to it. Others will be set lower, meaning you will need a shaped wedding ring. There are shaped rings that may fit perfectly next to your engagement ring, if you have a unique engagement ring design you may need to get a bespoke wedding ring shaped around your engagement ring. Again you will need to select your preferred metal and width of ring.

Diamond set wedding rings

A lot of brides and even grooms are opting for a bit of bling on their wedding rings, to either complement their engagement ring or to ensure the wedding ring stands out on its own! Our blog post about diamonds may help in this selection, but remember for smaller stones you may not have a choice of colour and clarity as the diamonds are pre-selected to ensure they fit within the wedding ring band.
