Bridget & Paul   ♥   Cuba, Caribbean

Abroad Wedding

Bridget and Paul jetted off to the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean to say ‘I do’, or ‘Si’ in this case! The location choice for their destination wedding was the 20 kilometre stretch of white sandy beach which is Varadero in Cuba.

This stunning tropical setting with year-round blue skies created a colourful Caribbean backdrop to their relaxed, destination wedding day.

Bridget says:

“We are not that traditional so we knew we didn’t want to get married in a church and the cost for a UK wedding was quite high so we decided on going abroad. Originally we looked at Europe but with some destinations you have to have been in the country for so long beforehand and we found it was cheaper in the Caribbean. Cuba was recommended to us by the groom’s brother and there was lots to do to suit everyone.”

“We did have a bit of trouble convincing some of our family, but we had decided so nothing was going to stop us! It was our day after all and this was what we really wanted.”

Legal requirements

UK couples can legally marry in New York. The wedding ceremonies and the marriage certificate you receive are legally recognised as binding and are in accordance with UK laws.

The legalities of getting married in New York are quite straight forward, however it is always a good idea to use a wedding planner or to make good use of the hotel wedding coordinator (if you’re getting married in a hotel). It will give you peace of mind that everything is running smoothly from across the Atlantic as well as giving you a little hand holding on your arrival in New York – ensuring you’re stress free in the lead up to your big day.

Marriage License

You will need to obtain a marriage license when you arrive in New York at one of the City Clerk’s offices. Again, if you’re using a wedding planner, they will be able to talk you through this whole process.

  • The bride and groom-to-be need to appear in person at the office with their passports and birth certificates to obtain the license.
  • The marriage license is valid 24 hours after it is issued.
  • On your wedding day, the marriage license needs to be signed by the officiant, the witnesses and the bride and groom and then delivered back to the City Clerk’s offices.
  • The final version of your wedding certificate will then be sent to your home some weeks later.

Kate says:

“In 2008 Patrick and I visited New York for the first time. It was before we had got engaged and we hadn’t really talked too much about the big “M’ word. The minute we entered the city we both agreed that NYC was the wedding venue for us! Everything about it, from the atmosphere, size, wow factor and the sense that it was the best city we had ever visited.”

“We got engaged in 2009 and as a complete one off (I promise!) I switched on Wedding TV. By coincidence it was a New York wedding special following a company named Ultimate USA Weddings. The Director of the company – Gino – was an instant TV star. I said straight away to Pat, ‘Lets use him to plan our wedding!’ We chose the venues, flowers etc all online which was surprisingly easy and still as exciting as doing the choosing in person.”
