Wedding Rings Direct:

Most people have heard of the different metals which are used to make engagement and wedding rings. However making a choice between them is a different story! This blog post discusses the different metal options for your rings and gives you the advantages and some of the drawbacks for each metal.

Platinum

Platinum is our most popular choice for engagement and wedding rings. It is the hardest metal available and is also the rarest, its natural white sheen will never fade or change colour. However it is important to remember that no metal is scratch proof, but the benefit of platinum is the metal is displaced if scratched rather than lost.

Platinum is naturally hypoallergenic and is the best choice if you have the budget for a gorgeous ring to last a lifetime. Due to its rarity platinum is the most expensive metal to use for engagement and wedding rings.

Palladium

Palladium is part of the platinum group of metals and is affordable in comparison to platinum; however it is worth noting it is definitely not as hard.  Palladium is becoming increasingly popular for its natural white colour which does not tarnish or require re-plating.

White gold

White gold is a popular choice for both engagement and wedding rings. Like platinum, white gold provides a lovely backdrop for diamonds. White gold rings are plated with rhodium to give its brilliant white shine. 9ct white gold rings are made up of 37.5% gold, 14ct are 58.5% gold and 18ct are 75% gold; the rest is made up of palladium and silver. 9ct is more hard-wearing than 18ct due to the lower percentage of gold in 9ct white gold. Although strong, rhodium wears away over time. Re-plating is a simple process that can be done to restore whiteness at any time.

Yellow gold

Yellow gold is definitely a traditional choice for engagement and wedding rings. 9ct yellow gold rings are made up of 37.5% gold, 14ct are 58.5% gold, 18ct are 75% gold and 22ct are 91.6% gold. The rest is made up of copper, silver, cobalt and zinc. As with white gold the lower the percentage of gold the more hardwearing the ring will be. The colour of the ring is also affected by the carat, 9ct being light yellow and 22ct being a deeper yellow.

Following on from last month’s post about engagement ring styles, we are now helping you to understand diamonds.

Making sure you choose a diamond that meets your specification and budget can be overwhelming, but this post aims to help you make your purchase easy and simple to understand. The 4 C’s are a good place to start when trying to understand diamonds; Cut, Colour, Carat and Clarity. The most popular diamond cuts are brilliant (round stones) and princess (square stones). There are other cuts available such as emerald and marquise.

The colour of the diamond is measured on a scale from D to Z, D is colourless this allows more light to pass through, giving the diamond more sparkle. As the gradings progress through the alphabet to Z, the diamonds take on a yellowish/brownish tone. Anything up to colour H is considered white, with a hint of yellow appearing in diamonds graded from I onwards.

Wedding Rings Direct:

You’ve decided you want to pop the question or you’ve both come to a decision to get married. Whatever your budget is for an engagement ring it is a very important purchase that you want to get right as it’s going to be on her finger forever!

This blog post will give you some pointers on the different styles of engagement rings, to help you find the right ring for your right lady! Next month’s blog post will give you a crash course in diamonds to help you understand the different cut, carat, colour and clarity of diamond to choose.

The style of the ring is one of the first things to think about, has your future bride pointed out any rings she likes? Is her style quite classic or does she prefer a vintage look? The style of engagement rings do vary and sometimes people opt for a style that isn’t a ‘usual’ engagement ring but suits the person who will be wearing the ring, for example a band set with diamonds all the way or half way round and not a ring with a single stone.

Another thing to consider when choosing her engagement ring is the kind of wedding ring she will later be wearing with it, some engagement rings are ‘wed fit’ which means a wedding ring can fit perfectly next to the ring; if a single diamond is set high enough for the wedding ring to sit next to/under it. However some engagement rings will need a shaped wedding ring so both the rings sit nicely next to each other.
