You Mean The World To Me

Ever dreamt of putting down your wedding planning list and hopping on a plane to get married with just you and your one and only?

Well that’s exactly what today’s couple did! They had their special day their way and the result was an intimate wedding, made perfectly for two and filled with fun thanks to iPlan New York.

Emma and John said ‘I do’ with the brilliant blue sunshiny sky and the gorgeous green landscape of Central Park as their guests, before they took in the sights and sounds of NYC on a romantic photo tour with the bustling city as their backdrop.

Emma says:

“John and I met at a nightclub in Cardiff, Wales in 2008 and our first date involved going for Japanese food, getting lost and almost running out of petrol. It was our fifth year anniversary on the day we got married.”

“On Christmas Eve 2012, John told me that I could open one present a day early. I was very excited, who doesn’t love opening presents! We went to the Christmas tree and he nervously handed me a rectangular box. I opened the box and there was a Welsh Lovespoon. John started telling me all about what this particular Lovespoon meant and described how in the olden days these were given as a sign of courtship and engagement. Then this light bulb went off in my head and I looked at him and he said ‘Will you marry me’. I told him to shut up at first, I was completely shocked, he repeated the question and I said ‘YES’. Other than that one little word I didn’t speak for about two hours. He certainly surprised me!”

“After the engagement we discussed getting married somewhere in Wales but as the plans started coming together the guest list had grown excessively and was turning into something we just didn’t want.”

“One Saturday night we had a big chat about where we were going with this and decided we just wanted to go away and get married, just the two of us. As soon as we decided on jetting off to tie the knot we knew there was only one place we wanted to get married, New York City. We had previously been there on holiday as part of our tour of the East Coast of America back in 2010 and just fell in love with the city. Our parents and friends we were very supportive of our decisions to get married in New York. They just wanted us to do what made us happy.”

“After speaking with Lisa at iPlan New York about the endless possibilities we decided on Central Park. Lisa gave us a list of places where we could get married and as soon as we saw Gapstow Bridge, we knew that was the spot.”

“We would certainly recommend our Officiant, Rev Annie Lawrence. What a delight she was! From the moment we met her she was so easy to connect with. She made us feel so comfortable and the ceremony was just so special.”

“The dress search started quite frantically as I only had four months until the big day. I originally wanted something a little bohemian and simple. This soon changed once my best friends took me dress shopping.”

“I’d always loved the 50’s style short dresses but didn’t think they were really me. After trying some on I instantly fell in love with the style and knew that this style of dress would be perfect for a New York City wedding. After flicking through one of my many wedding magazines I came across Kitty and Dulcie, a London based duo that make the most amazing dresses at fantastic prices. I instantly fell in love with the ‘Pearly Queen’, it was everything I had been looking for, it was flirty, fun, and screamed ‘Sex and the City’ – SOLD!”

“I did my hair and make-up myself. I knew we wouldn’t have much time to arrange for me to meet with a beautician and stylist before the big day and didn’t want to end up not looking like me on the day. I have a wonderful friend, Clayton Reid, who works for NARS and we had a make-up trial before I left for New York. He gave me some amazing tips and made sure I knew what I would need to do to recreate the look he had given me.”

“The flowers were the perfect contrast against my dress! Since the wedding day I have received a lot of compliments about my bouquet.  Flowers were by JC Floral Design and came included in the wedding package with iPlan New York.”

“John wore a navy suit from Ted Baker, it was the first and only suit he tried on. As soon as he stepped out of the changing room in John Lewis I knew it was perfect. It fitted him perfectly. John finished off the suit with grey suede shoes from Clarks Originals.”

“When looking for the perfect hotel for our wedding we were torn between The Standard in the Meatpacking District and The James in SoHo. It’s fair to say we made the right choice and picked the fantastic boutique hotel, The James.”

“From the moment we arrived we knew our stay would be a special one. As soon as the hotel heard of our wedding plans we received a complimentary room upgrade and arrived back later that day to find champagne chilling with a lovely note from the hotel Manager. This was just a perfect start to our stay. The James has one of Manhattan’s best rooftop bars, Jimmy’s, which boasts incredible views of the New York skyline, including the World Trade Centre Tower 1. We would certainly recommend staying here and we will definitely be back for an anniversary in the near future.”

“After the ceremony in Central Park we embarked on a photo tour of the city starting at Sixth Avenue where part of the road was closed which gave us the perfect opportunity for some really cool shots in the middle of the road.”

“After photographs at the Love Sculpture we went to the Highline, an elevated freight rail line transformed into a public park on Manhattan’s West Side. As we are walking around we are congratulated and clapped by many, we felt like movie stars. There was one shot on the Highline where we have the Empire State Building behind us. It is fair to say not many people we know have that in their wedding photographs!”

“After the Highline Joe suggested we celebrate our nuptials with a beer at The Standard Bier Garten in the Meatpacking District. We left the Bier Garten and wondered around the Meatpacking before finishing our photo tour at South Street Seaport. With fantastic views of the Brooklyn Bridge it was the perfect way to end an unforgettable day.”

“Our favourite photograph from the day would have to be the one of us holding hands in the middle of the road in Sixth Avenue and you can see a string of yellow cabs driving towards us.”

“Our evening meal took place at Del Friscos in the Theatre District. It was so good we went back again on our last night in the city. Thank you for the recommendation Lisa!”

“Our favourite thing to do in New York is walking around the city and soaking in all what the city has to offer. We adore the SoHo, Greenwich Village and Meatpacking areas and love dreaming of owning a Brownstone! The Highline is definitely a new favourite but our most favourite place in New York is Gapstow Bridge, Central Park – the spot where we got married that has the most picturesque views of the skyscrapers beyond the trees.”

“After New York we jetted off on a two-week tour of Canada. First stop, Calgary, to visit some friends that have recently emigrated there. From Calgary we went on to the Rocky Mountains in Banff, Jasper, Moraine Lake, Kelowna before ending our tour in the beautiful city of Vancouver. It really was an incredible way to start married life.”

What were your highlights and your favourite memories from the day?

  • “The whole day was incredible. We still pinch ourselves today that this really happened to us.”
  • “During our photo tour Joe suggested we celebrate our nuptials with a beer at The Standard Bier Garten in the Meatpacking District. We think Joe had an ulterior motive to get us in there because no sooner had we finished the beer were we playing table tennis! This was so funny, we were absolutely terrible at it and we had such a big audience watching us but we didn’t care, we had so much fun.”

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be who are looking to have a destination wedding in New York?

  • “Enjoy every minute.”
  • “Make sure you give yourself enough time to get your marriage license, you need to have it a full 24 hours before you get married. We arrived on Thursday afternoon and knew we need the licence by 1pm on Friday at the latest. We were a bit panicky about making sure we had it and pegged it over to City Hall on Thursday before it closed. We waited in line for just over an hour and we were seen. Phew!”

Do you have any tips for other couples thinking of getting married, just the two of them?

  • “Believe in what you are doing is right for you. Your wedding day should be all about you and not about worrying whether Auntie Gwenda will like the table decorations and vol-au-vents.”
  • “Breaking the news to our parents wasn’t too bad. Both sets of parents had really small weddings and they both know the stress you are under on your wedding day. We skyped our parents on the morning of the wedding, asked our photographer, Joe to take some snaps using our iPhone for us to send back and we also called them straight after the photo tour. This helped to make them feel part of the day.”

Would you do anything differently?

  • “We wished we had more time in the city. Five nights just didn’t feel like enough but then I guess there is never enough time to spend in the city. We will just have to make this our anniversary destination for the foreseeable future!”
