When today’s couple visited Mick’s Place – a boutique resort in Bali with unrestricted views over the pristine white sand of Bingin Beach, renowned as sporting some of Indonesia’s best waves – to celebrate the bride’s 30th birthday, they instantly knew the venue was ‘the one’ for them!

Not yet engaged, the groom romantically popped the question four short weeks later, with the vision of their destination wedding firmly established in their minds.

Fast-forward a year and Shannon and Dane tied the knot with the spectacular scenery of Mick’s Place as their backdrop. This breathtaking Bali wedding is brimming with steal-worthy DIY details: adding personality and charm to a stylish and cool celebration.

Shannon and Dane fell in love at first sight with this luxurious locale and it delivered them with the destination day of their dreams.

Shannon says:

“Dane booked a few nights at Mick’s Place last year for my 30th, we weren’t engaged yet but knew we always wanted to get married in Bali – as soon as we arrived we both said “this is it!” The view was breathtaking, it was so relaxing and one of Dane’s favorite waves was right out the front, it was perfect. We asked for a wedding package to be emailed through, Dane popped the question four weeks later and we booked it straight away!”

“For the invites I chose to use recycled craft paper with lace and ribbon. I did a travel envelope style invite, which had wedding information, flight and accommodation information, maps and Bali information. This tied in with the wedding theme, as I used burlap table runners and lace tea lights as I was going for a rustic feel. We also started a Facebook page so we could let guests know when there was a flight sale on.”

“I changed my mind on my dress so many times! I was going for backless, light and flowy for the heat, but then tried on a structured dress and fell in love! I grabbed a lighter dress off the rack the day before we left for Bali for my reception dress, great decision – it was so hot on the day of the wedding!”

“The bridesmaid dresses were a convertible dress which were perfect – the bridesmaids wore them whichever way suited them best and when the time came to dance, they tied them up to make them shorter.”

“Dane and the groomsmen wore a lightweight quick dry Hurley short, which was perfect for the heat and even better when we all jumped in the pool after dinner fully clothed!”

“The morning of the wedding, my bridesmaids Emma, Brooke and Ellie helped me put the bonbonnieres together around the honeymoon suite infinity pool. After that, Dane and I had a few hours together by ourselves in our private honeymoon suite area until hair, make up and flowers arrived. The girls and I got ready in the honeymoon suite with my mum.”

“While the girls started on hair and make up, mum and I set the tables up with the help of Dane and the boys. The tables consisted of burlap table runners which I made, books, jars with flowers and lace tea light jars. I handmade the napkin covers and the wooden name cards and each guest had a card with a key attached to ‘make a wish or predict our future’ and put in a time capsule. The bonbonniere for girls was a crystal wine bottle stopper and for the boys, an engraved bottle opener key ring – all in a mini craft bag with twine.”

“Flowers were roses and baby’s breath on the tables, with our bouquets in the middle after the ceremony. By the time this was all set up – it was my turn to get ready and all of a sudden, it was go time!”

“We had our close friend Jimi as our meet and greet guy. He took a Polaroid of the guests as they arrived which they stuck on a piece of card and wrote a message for us to frame. They also signed on an old vinyl which we will be putting in a shadow box. I made program fans for the guests which Jimi also gave them on the way in. Drinks were served on the terrace with some chilled music while we got ready.”

“I didn’t really have time to take it all in until the aisle song started, then it all felt real. The girls started to walk out, I told them all I loved them as they started walking and started to feel tears well up. As soon as I saw Dane, the tears disappeared and I just wanted to run up and give him a huge kiss and cuddle!”

“During the ceremony, Dane and I were chatting to each other and laughing. We snapped back to reality when everyone started laughing at us – we missed the part where the priest said we could kiss!”

“After the ceremony, we had our photos taken around the venue, which was absolutely amazing! After a few drinks with the bridal party around the honeymoon suite and a quick dress change, we joined the guests who were already seated. We had a buffet meal, nice and relaxed and had some chilled music playing over dinner. A few speeches later and we had our first dance and kicked the party off.”

“After dancing so much, we were all so hot – so we decided to jump into the pool – dresses and all! The guests followed and we spent most of the night in the pool.”

“The wedding was exactly our personality, no formalities and all party! We had so much fun, it was quite sad when it was all over. Poor Dane thought that was the end of wedding planning, but after many, many nights leading up to the wedding on Google, Etsy and wedding blogs, I had withdrawals from wedding planning – so I started my own rustic party hire business called Peppa & Peach. He has lost me to weddings again!”

What were your highlights and your favourite memories from the day?

  • “The highlight of the day was seeing Dane as I walked down the aisle. I remember squeezing his hand throughout the whole ceremony while we were chatting and laughing. We couldn’t stop giving each other huge bear hugs the whole day!”
  • “Everyone was so happy and in holiday mode, we were saying goodbye to the guests at the end and thanked them for coming so far for us. A few of them said what?! No! Thank you for inviting us – this was the best day ever! Others asked if we could renew our vows every year and thanked us for showing them another side of Bali they never knew existed.”

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be who are looking to get married in Bali?

  • “Organise your guest list early before you get your heart set on a venue – some venues have small capacities.”
  • “Give your guests plenty of notice – they may need to get their passports in order. Keep guests in the loop for flight and accommodation deals.”
  • “Destination weddings may require getting your guests list finalised earlier than usual, so you may get some cancellations closer to the wedding. Three people in our wedding party couldn’t make it in the end because their babies were due within a week of the wedding!”

Would you do anything differently?

  • “The red velvet butter cream cake was gone before we knew it – I was looking forward to eating it the moment I ordered it! Take a moment to step back, take it all in and eat the cake! It goes way too fast!!”

First dance:

  • “A rock ‘n’ roll and jive mix. Dane got sick with the flu when we first arrived in Bali, so we had no time to rehearse…we just danced around like idiots and got everyone up with us to kick start the party!”

Dance floor classics:

  • “Started off with a few oldies, then into some old school punk then hip hop and finished with dance music – something for everyone!”

Do you have any wedding budget tips?

  • “Sometimes you can find cheaper vendors than your venue offers, if they allow it, don’t be afraid to source your own!”
  • “Also, as spirits are expensive and wine/champagne isn’t the nicest in Bali, have your guests bring a bottle over from duty free if the venue allows it. We found that even with corkage, spirits were a cheaper option – cocktail punch for the ladies and beer for the guys.”
  • “Independent wedding planners can be quite pricey – if your venue has an in house wedding planner, it’s a bonus!”
