If you were trying to dream up the perfect beachside destination wedding location, images like the ones from today’s real wedding would probably come to mind. Bleached white sand, rolling turquoise waves mirrored by the tropical sky with palm trees blowing in the ocean breeze as the sun smiles overhead.

Put simply, this blissful beach wedding is stunning. And not only that, so are the happy couple. From Kara’s timeless dress that she teamed with a Monique Lhuillier belt (it’s amazing and super sparkly and we so want one) to the special looks caught on camera between her and Carlos, this wedding is dazzling. Plus, they went all out on pretty personal touches and really made their destination day their own.

One of the songs that became a dance floor classic at Kara and Carlos’ wedding was Bill Withers ‘Lovely Day’ and we couldn’t imagine a song that could better sum up this magical Mexico wedding.

So get comfy, pop ‘Lovely Day’ on in the background and come join us in the relaxed Mexico mood we’ve been in since we first saw these beauties.

Kara says:

“Choosing Tulum as our destination was the perfect decision for Carlos and me. I had visited a few years prior to getting engaged and knew it would be idyllic for a wedding. The rustic charm, amazing food and gorgeous white-sand beaches had me sold immediately. Carlos and I visited Tulum together in June of 2012 to scout wedding venues and decided that spring was the best time of year to share this hidden gem with our friends. Now the real fun could begin.”

“It took us nine months to get 100 of our closest friends and family members booked and ready to go. We wanted to make sure everyone had time to explore Tulum and discover things on their own, but also give our guests some guidance on where to go and what to see. Destination Weddings Tulum helped us arrange airport transportation, hotels, a snorkeling excursion, family dinners, cocktail hours, rehearsal dinner as well as the big event.”

“For the wedding day décor we really wanted to just enhance the perfect rustic beauty of Tulum at La Zebra. Clean white linens and flowers in mason jars along with rustic burlap runners were the basis for our theme. We added pops of blues to enhance the already perfect blue skies and oceans of Tulum. Lighting was also very important to us given the party after dinner was held directly on the beach. We added tons of string lights above the dance-floor and above the beautiful white lounges that were set up on the beach. We also had candles all over the tables and dance-floor to add to the natural light. ”

“Choosing the way you want to look on your wedding day is also a fun task! I took several months to try on lots of dress options and decided on a classic strapless lace dress by JLM accented with a crystal belt by Monique Lhuillier. I knew how windy the Tulum beaches would be so hair and make-up was an important detail to me. I coordinated with my hair stylist from LA to join us in Tulum for her own vacation and was lucky to have that work out. I love the natural curls and the braided aesthetic she has and it was awesome to have her do my hair and make-up and work on all eight of my bridesmaids!”

“Music was a very important detail to us when planning the wedding. We wanted a combination of classic and unexpected songs all performed by an amazing acoustic guitarist sitting next to us on the beach.  Ever since I was a little girl, I had always dreamt that my bridesmaids would walk down the aisle to Pachabel’s Canon in D.”

“The morning of the wedding was a perfect day for me. We rented the house at La Zebra and family and friends in the wedding came in and out throughout the day to have their hair done, hang out and get excited for the ceremony together. My mom and sister brought sandwiches and snacks to munch on all day and we enjoyed that special time together. My husband Carlos and his groomsmen were on the other side of the hotel in Cabana nine doing the same thing, although it took them far less time to get ready!”

“Seeing my Mom all dressed up and feeling beautiful in her dress was the first moment I teared up and then when my father came in to see me for the first time it was completely surreal. I felt so lucky to have my parents there with me along with my sisters, niece and nephew, cousins and best friends all by my side.”

“My father not only walked me down the aisle, to my handsome fiancé, but he also performed our service. It was so meaningful to have someone who knows you so well officiate that special moment in life. The service was perfect in our eyes, but didn’t go off without a few hiccups! The sound system on the beach was a little less than optimal and threw us off a few times, forcing my cousin to intervene and play ‘mic-stand’. Having her next to me proved to be very supportive, even if she did have a couple nervous laughing spells. Our self-written vows went off without a hitch and were so amazingly beautiful I want to re-live that moment again and again. When we got to the traditional vows, my husband had a slight meltdown. When my father led him to say: ‘I Carlos take you Kara’ for some reason he kept messing up and saying ‘I Kara take you Carlos’. This happened not once or twice, but FOUR times. Looking back at the pictures of that exact moment is priceless and I couldn’t imagine a more authentic and real moment happening any other way.”

“After the ceremony we took photos on the beautiful Tulum beaches while the sun was setting. Our guests enjoyed cocktails on the beach while being entertained by a classic mariachi band. The evening continued inside Lina’s at La Zebra with an amazing dinner served family style to our guests. One of my favourite moments of the night was when my sisters gave the most beautiful speech I had ever heard. They reminisced about growing up together and eloquently described our idyllic childhood, including honoring my Grandmother who is no longer with us. My sisters knew how important it was for me to feel like our Mimi was a part of this special day and I’m even more honored to wear her wedding ring.”

“The evening continued with visiting our guests and enjoying the best tres leches cake I’d ever had! We moved the party onto the dance-floor for our special first dance together. Carlos and I had perfected a few turns and a dip to the classic tune. We also mixed the end of our classic wedding song to a re-mix and invited our bridal party to dance with us. This re-mix ended up being a hi-lite on the dance-floor and began and ended the night as our dance-floor  ‘anthem’.”

“Once we got the dance-party started we really didn’t stop the rest of the night! After our first dance we enjoyed special dances with my Father and Carlos’ Mother. It was nice for us to have a few quiet moments with our parents and be able to soak it all in. The ocean breezes and amazing DJ kept us on the dance floor well into midnight and we watched all our friends and family bring out dance moves I never knew they had in them!”

What were your highlights and your favourite memories from the day?

  • “Toward the end of the night another favourite moment was when 10-15 of my girlfriends gathered around me and we danced and jumped around to ‘This Girl Is On Fire’ by Alicia Keys.  It was an unforgettable moment and encapsulated all the excitement of a perfect wedding day.”

Do you have any wedding budget tips?

  • “The biggest tip I can give future brides on how to keep budget-friendly is to prioritise. Pick the top three things that are the most important to you and make them the best they can be. Know that a wedding is expensive but in the end the memories and any stress that goes along with all the planning will be more than worth it.”
