Emilia & Fernando ♥ Braga, Portugal
Photographer: Branco Prata
Portugal could just be the most perfect European destination wedding location. With a winning combination of glorious summer sunshine, golden sandy beaches, dramatic coastlines, picturesque towns and villages intertwined with narrow cobbled streets that boast the freshest fish restaurants and more fine local wines than you can shake your vino glass at, really, what more could your destination wedding dreams be made of?
Since Fernando is from Portugal, it made perfect sense for him and Emilia (who is originally from Poland) to tie the knot in this beautiful country that he calls home, and so they jetted off from London where they both currently reside to say their ‘I Do’s’ in Fernando’s quaint local church.
This joyful, quirky and at times kitsch (check out the scrumptious naked cake and super-cute cake topper!) destination wedding celebration is utterly charming. The ethereal, almost magical scenery and the soft light of summer sets the idyllic scene; partner this with Emilia’s delicate flower-detailed dress, blooms that are literally like a bright burst of summer and a retro campervan getaway car and you have today’s enchanting soiree!
Annie & Jason ♥ Sintra, Portugal
Photographer: Piteira Photography
There’s something so wonderfully romantic about elopements; the idea of a day which is purely just about the two of you and for the two of you and enjoying your day totally your way.
Today’s elopement is no exception on the romance front that’s for sure! Annie and Jason put their wedding day in the trusted hands of Piteira Photography – they even asked if they could suggest a location for their destination wedding and boy, did the talented team come up trumps!
The Park and Palace of Monserrate in Sintra, near Lisbon created the most ethereal outdoor ceremony setting you’ve ever seen. It’s like a scene from A Midsummer Nights Dream. Oh, and Annie looks seriously stunning, rocking a beyond-beautiful Vera Wang gown. Prepare to be wowed with today’s wedding, it doesn’t disappoint.
“Annie and Jason… where do I even begin? Their wedding was our first one of 2013 and was certainly a day we will never forget. They first contacted us last year to see if we were available for their wedding, they explained that it was just going to be the 2 of them, an elopement of sorts, and as we chatted about their plans for the day we knew immediately that this was going to be a wedding unlike any we´d photographed before. Neither of them had been to mainland Portugal before but had been following our blog for a while and fell in love with the country through our eyes… which is a pretty big compliment in itself, but the cherry-on-top was when they asked us to pick the location of their ceremony, as they trusted our vision and knew we would find the best spot. No pressure!!”
Melanie & Alex ♥ Algarve, Portugal
Photographer: Matt + Lena Photography
Melanie and Alex jetted off to the golden beaches of the Algarve for a super-sweet elopement made perfectly for three, with their beautiful baby girl Josie as their only guest.
They said ‘I Do’ on the sheltered sandy bay of Albandeira, surrounded by tall craggy cliffs, whilst the waves of the Atlantic Ocean crashed onto the beach behind them, the swash nipping at their heels….what a wonderfully romantic setting!
Matt and Lena were the oh-so-talented photographers of this darling day and tell us more….
“Alex and Melanie live in Germany, they love to travel, it has always been something they were passionate about. When it came to planning their wedding the first thing they had to decide on was the destination. They imagined a simple, beautiful beach elopement. The Algarve was perfect, with its stunning coastline, secluded coves along the sand stone cliffs and the vast Atlantic Ocean.”
Jessie & Elliot ♥ Lisbon, Portugal
Photographer: Piteira Photography
All of the pieces fell flawlessly into place for Jessie and Elliot’s destination wedding.
As they searched for somewhere to become husband and wife, they were drawn to picturesque Portugal where they had spent their first holiday together and where they truly fell in love. With such a special meaning to them both, this lovely locale appeared to be the perfect fit.
In pursuit of the ideal venue they discovered the dreamy Quinta de Sant’Ana (what a find!) and chose to hold their intimate reception in the wildly romantic, rolling vineyards surrounding this magnificent manor house.
The stunning location was infused with Jessie and Elliot’s personality with a delicately decorated ribbon alter, luscious lavender detailing and Jessie even made her own dress from the fabric of a vintage dress that she had found and with a little helping hand from a talented tailor.
This is the kind of wedding you wish you’d had an invite to, relaxed and informal and full of fun, yet oh-so-elegant, wonderfully whimsical and pretty as a picture all at the same time.
Jessie was right – Portugal really was the perfect fit.
“There are so many things that we loved about Jessie and Elliot’s wedding that it’s difficult to even know where to start… Right from the very first emails we knew that these guys had something special going on and Jessie’s efficiency and organisation skills are just out of this world… she kept in constant contact with us throughout the planning and when she asked us for suggestions as to what time the light would be best for the ceremony, and which way the altar should be positioned in relation to the sun, it was right there that we knew we had booked one of the most awesome brides ever.”
“Their ceremony was one of the most beautiful we have ever witnessed, not just because of the evening light (although that definitely helped!) but because Jessie and Elliot incorporated many little gestures and traditions from their collective family heritage…to honour Elliots Swedish roots they walked into the ceremony together, signifying equality in marriage; they passed their wedding rings around for their friends and family to bless before exchanging them with one another… and many other little traditions that made their day truly about them. It was everything we love in a wedding day and totally our style, from the preparations at the Aldeia de Mata Pequena (such a beautiful place!) to the intimate evening ceremony in the vineyards at the Quinta de Sant’Ana and we honestly loved every minute of it, thank you guys for choosing us to be a part of your amazing day and for your kind hearts and generous spirits, we wish you every happiness for the future.”
“People say that Paris is the most romantic city in Europe but our love story began in Portugal. Well technically it began in Ethiopia, where we were working, but Portugal was the destination of our first vacation and where we truly fell in love with each other. So when deciding on a wedding location, Portugal was the perfect fit.”

Lisa & Alex ♥ Lisbon, Portugal
Photographer: Centrimagem Casamentos
When Alex and Lisa (known as 2People1Life) were researching weddings, they found amazing manor houses, castles, beaches, garden parties, and more, but not what they were looking for. So they saved their money, sold everything, including Alex’s business and their home in Manchester, England, and set off around the world in search of the ultimate wedding.
These two have been pretty busy, having said ‘I Do’ in every country they have visited on their travels so far. If you’ve missed any of their nuptials on their amazing worldwide wedding journey, take a sneak peek at weddings 1-33 and weddings 34-61.
Wedding number 45 took them to the romantic, riad rooftops of Marrakech, and after a secluded, secret ceremony in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, Lisa and Alex arrived in Lisbon, the enchanting capital city of Portugal for wedding number 47…
“We were so excited for this wedding and desperately needed to get a hair cut before we could have another picture taken! We rushed around the morning of the big day getting lost, finding parking and finally getting our hair cut and styled. We felt a million percent better about going to get our wedding on as we rushed to meet everyone!”
“We finally met with our friend and photographer Tiago, (with whom we had been in touch for around 18 months) and the team he had pulled together at 1pm on the waterfront in front of the massive and beautiful monument to Portugals Age of Discovery.”
“Everyone was so excited to get going and (of course), we were a little late so we all hit the ground running. Within seconds of making introductions I was in Peggy having my make up applied by the beautiful Ludmila Gonçalves, Alex was pulling out the wedding box and shaking creases out of my dress (the ever faithful Tabitha) and his suit jacket and dusting off our shoes.”
“Wedding Planner Andreia had thought of everything, she handed me Fado inspired earrings (handed down by her grandmother), a beautiful Portuguese scarf, my bouquet was traditional red roses and more importantly; carnations, a very important Portuguese symbol. Bright red carnations represent the 1974 coup d’etat started by the military to end the fascist regime ongoing since 1926 and on top of all of that, the pop of colour was just perfect against Tabitha’s vintage lace.”
